A Private Collection of 19th-20th Century Chinese Art

Our History

When China first opened its doors to the world in 1979, Qiu Zhai Art Studio’s Founder visited Rong Bao Zhai in Beijing, a 350 year-old Chinese Art Gallery, with the idea of helping more people especially those outside China enjoy Chinese Art.

Qiu Zhai Art Studio developed deep relationships with prominent Chinese artists, including the likes of Wu Guanzhong and Li Keran, and actively promoted their works - staging a total of 157 art exhibitions over the last 40 years

Over the years, major art museums and galleries, including the Beijing Art Museum, Nanjing Museum, National Museum of Taiwan History and National Gallery Singapore have exhibited works from Qiu Zhai’s collection in shows on various themes.

Contemporary Chinese Art Masters

Collected Works

Qiu Zhai’s collection features works of prominent Chinese artists of the late 19th century to the early 21st century - coinciding with the post-Opium war and pre-Republic period of China’s history.

Through their works, one can understand how contemporary aspirations and a defense of tradition have collectively shaped the definition of modern Chinese art. These include the works of influential masters such as Zhang Daqian, Qi Baishi, Xu Beihong, Lin Fengmian, Fu Baoshi, Li Keran, Wu Guanzhong and many others.

Documenting Transformation

By focusing on Chinese art from the 19th-20th century, we capture how modern Chinese art history was shaped by unprecedented developments in China not seen for a thousand years - with Chinese ink painting experiencing remarkable changes during this turbulent period.

Between 2010 and 2019, Qiu Zhai’s art collection was compiled into nine-volumes - with a volume published every year. This set of records has been recognised by many as a valuable source of reference for the history of modern Chinese art today.

From Blossom To Harvest

A Century of Modern Chinese Painting

To commemorate Christie’s 250th anniversary, the auction house staged a special exhibition featuring some 250 masterpieces from Qiu Zhai’s collection titled, From Blossom To Harvest: A Century of Modern Chinese Paintings, in Hong Kong in 2016. The selection was compiled into a two-volume catalogue and published in conjunction with the exhibition.
